HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire man charged in connection with the death of his 19-month-old stepson has waived his probable cause hearing.

Leo Witham, of Hampton, appeared in court on Wednesday. He faces charges of endangering the welfare of child, drug possession and falsifying evidence.

The child died on Oct. 5. Police say the 30-year-old Witham had brought him to the Hampton Fire Department after noticing he was unresponsive. They say they found an open container of fentanyl at Witham’s home.

Police say the cause of the child’s death is still under investigation. Prosecutors have said more severe charges could be filed against Witham.

WMUR-TV reports that Witham’s attorney said last week his client was trying to get help for a drug problem.
