ATMORE, Ala. (AP) - Corrections officials say another officer has been assaulted at a troubled prison in south Alabama.

A statement from the department says a lieutenant at Holman prison in Atmore was trying to control an inmate when the man assaulted the officer with a makeshift weapon on Thursday.

The officer was treated for a minor cut above one of his eyes, and 27-year-old inmate Robert Washington is charged with assault. He is serving 20 years for a robbery conviction in Montgomery.

The alleged assault comes just weeks after another officer, Kenneth Bettis, was fatally stabbed at Holman, where inmate uprisings have occurred.

The prison is on lockdown, and an emergency response team is on hand.

The Justice Department said earlier this month it is investigating conditions in Alabama’s men’s prisons.
