BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - School is in session in Vermont’s largest school district after Burlington teachers and school administers reached a contract agreement, averting a strike.

The tentative agreement between the Burlington Education Association and the school board was reached Wednesday evening. Teachers had been prepared to strike on Thursday if no agreement was reached.

Details of the agreement will not be released until it’s ratified by both parties.

The two sides began meeting Wednesday morning with a federal mediator. If the talks had failed, it would have been the first teacher strike in Burlington since 1978.

The yearlong contract negotiations were bitter. The school district has 400 teachers and about 4,000 students.
