HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) - Police say a 50-year-old woman whose decomposing body was found in her home near Hayward earlier this month was stabbed to death and her son has been arrested in the killing.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/2dD1fmO ) Thursday that 28-year-old LeMario Thomas was arrested Monday in Centralia, Wash., on suspicion of auto burglary. Officials say he then admitted to authorities that he also killed his mother.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Officer spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly says he left California after the death of his mother, Patricia Carpenter. Kelly says Alameda County investigators went to Washington to interview Thomas and he confessed again to killing her.

A neighbor called police about two weeks ago to report a foul odor and flies coming from the home Carpenter and Thomas shared. Carpenter’s body was discovered in the living room.
