BEND, Ore. (AP) - A trial date has been set for a Redmond man accused of killing a woman whose body was found near an Oregon highway.

The Bulletin reports (https://is.gd/CIinaI ) that eight weeks after Oct. 10, 2017, have been set aside for the trial of Edwin Lara in Deschutes County Circuit Court. Lara is charged with murder in the July death of 23-year-old Kaylee Sawyer.

Authorities say Lara, a security officer at Central Oregon Community College, kidnapped and tried to sexually assault Sawyer as she took a late-night walk near campus and then killed her to cover up his crimes.

Lara’s attorney, Benjamin Kim, could not be reached for comment.

Lara’s next court hearing is Nov. 3.
