LAKELAND, Ga. (AP) - Former Lakeland mayor and state Rep. James “Jay” Shaw is being remembered on a section of U.S. Highway 22/State Route 31 in Lanier County.

Officials from across the state traveled there Wednesday to dedicate the James Slaton “Jay” Shaw Memorial Highway. Shaw died in April 2015. He was 67.

Shaw had served as Lakeland’s mayor for 10 years, a state representative for 18 years and as a state transportation board member.

The Valdosta Daily Times (https://bit.ly/2dy6iBF ) reports Tim Golden, a member of the state transportation board, described Shaw during the ceremony as a “bulldog” who was straightforward and fought for the people he represented.

State Rep. Amy Carter, state Sen. Ellis Black and Congressman Austin Scott also attended the ceremony with about 175 others.
