WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Heavy rain has swept through central and eastern Massachusetts causing flooding on local streets and roads.

The National Weather Service says Friday night’s storm dumped about 5 inches of rain on Worcester and 2 to 3 inches on communities such as Chelmsford and Leominster. Some utility customers were without power for several hours.

Worcester officials went on Twitter to urge residents to stay off the streets and told drivers to be cautious. Dozens of motorists became stranded in their vehicles.

The rain and lightning caused some high schools and colleges to postpone athletic events.
