NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A thrice-widowed woman convicted in the death of her second husband - and suspected in the death of her third - has been formally sentenced to life in prison.
The mandatory sentence was handed down Friday for Emma Raine, who was convicted in August in the second-degree murder of Ernest Smith.
Smith was shot to death at their New Orleans home in 2006.
It was a complicated case: Emma’s third husband, James Raine, was implicated in plotting Smith’s death.
James Raine was shot to death in Poplarville, Mississippi, in 2011 and Emma Raine is considered a suspect in that case, too. No arrests have been made.
Court records show she plans an appeal of her conviction.
