CHICAGO (AP) - Officials say a Chicago police officer shot and wounded a suspect after the man fled a vehicle and confronted an officer with a weapon.

A spokeswoman for the agency that investigates police-involved shootings tells WFLD-TV in Chicago that officers pulled over a vehicle Sunday morning that had been reported stolen.

Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac said one officer opened fire, hitting a man multiple times. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the man was struck in the lower extremities. No officers were injured.

Chicago police say three men exited the vehicle and fled before one “confronted an officer with a weapon.” Police say three people are in custody and two weapons were recovered.

The wounded man was taken to the hospital. Guglielmi said he was in serious but stable condition.
