NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a man drove his car through the doorway of a Newark business and then stole the owner’s cell phone when he tried to take pictures of the accident.

Newark police say 22-year-old Hakeem Gayle, of Maplewood, faces theft, drug possession and other charges stemming from the crash that occurred around 9:40 p.m. Saturday. He also apparently had been involved in another accident just minutes before the crash occurred.

Authorities say the 59-year-old man who owns the business tried to take photos of the crash with his cell phone. But Gayle allegedly took it and tried to run off before people at the scene stopped him and held him until police arrived.

No injuries were reported in the accidents.

It wasn’t known Sunday if Gayle has retained an attorney.
