PASCO, Wash. (AP) - The newest member of the Pasco City Council is the second Latino to serve in that capacity.

The Tri-City Herald reports (https://goo.gl/NxqUeF ) Chi Flores was unanimously selected by the six other council members Monday to fill the unexpired term held by Mike Garrison, who died in July.

The council fielded 11 applications for the job and interviewed five finalists a week ago.

Flores will join Saul Martinez as the council’s second Latino member. Martinez was appointed to an open seat in 2010 and has twice run unopposed.

Flores will have to face election in 2017 to stay on the council.

Latinos make up about one-third of the voting-age population in Pasco, a city of 62,000.
