WOODLAWN, Md. (AP) - A woman and her husband are charged in Baltimore County in the death of the woman’s 9-year-old daughter, who died in December of malnourishment and neglect.

A county grand jury indicted Jasmine Preston and Edward James of Baltimore last week on charges of child abuse resulting in death and neglect stemming from the death of Samara Preston. They’re being held at the county jail.

Police were called last December to a hotel on Security Boulevard for a report of an unresponsive child. Officers found Samara unconscious on a bed. She died at the scene. Police said in a statement that the girl had injuries to her face, as well as medical challenges.

In June, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
