FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A former Bakersfield police detective has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to sell 20 pounds of confiscated drugs.

Patrick Mara was sentenced Monday in federal court in Fresno a few weeks after his former partner got five years for stealing and selling confiscated meth.

KBAK-TV reports Mara (https://bit.ly/2dDQXVf) Mara retired from the police force and admitted to selling drugs.

Mara’s ex-partner, Damacio Diaz, was on the championship 1987 track team depicted in the movie “McFarland USA.” Diaz pleaded guilty to bribery and drug charges.

“McFarland USA” was released in 2015 and tells the story of coach Jim White, played by Kevin Costner, and the transformation of a rural running team.
