SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office says a memorial service will be held Nov. 5 for a deputy who was shot and killed last week when he entered a home to investigate a domestic disturbance in rural northern California.

Deputy Jack Hopkins, 31, died instantly after being shot Oct. 19 at a property outside of Alturas, California, near the Oregon border. The suspect, Jack Lee Breiner, remains hospitalized after another officer shot him.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday that Hopkins was humble, happy, good-natured and known for putting others needs before his own. It gave no update on the investigation.

Hopkins was the fourth California law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty in a span of two weeks.
