PURVIS, Miss. (AP) - The push to incorporate the Bellevue community may soon reach a milestone.

John Adcock, proposed mayor of Bellevue, tells The Hattiesburg American (https://hatne.ws/2eLcwRk) they are within 250 signatures of the total needed to file for incorporation.

In accordance with Mississippi incorporation procedures, Adcock says officials will step up their efforts to garner the signatures of two-thirds of the registered voters in the area necessary to file in chancery court.

Lamar County Supervisor Phillip Carlisle, a proponent of incorporation, said although it may not be easy, he’s confident officials will be able to obtain the required number of signatures.

If incorporated, Bellevue would be Lamar County’s fifth city and would span about 15 square miles with an initial population of approximately 6,000.
