UTICA, N.Y. (AP) - A teenager has admitted fatally shooting his father and then leaving the body covered by a tarp in the backyard of their central New York home.

Seventeen-year-old Austin Parker pleaded guilty Wednesday in Oneida County Court Wednesday to second-degree murder in last May’s killing of 52-year-old Steven Parker.

The teen said he used a rifle to kill his father in late May as the older man grilled burgers behind their home in Holland Patent, 45 miles east of Syracuse.

He then dragged the body to another part of the property and covered it with a tarp.

The body was discovered by police in late June after friends of the teen found two dead dogs in the home’s basement.

Parker faces 18 to 22 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced Dec. 14.
