NEW YORK (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a worker who fell into a tank at a wastewater treatment plant in Brooklyn.

Police say 32-year-old Michael Buffamante, of Hawthorne, was pulled from the water unconscious and rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It happened at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Coney Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.

FDNY Deputy Chief John Hodgens tells the New York Post the man had sunk to the bottom of the tank and was submerged for about eight minutes.

The Department of Environmental Protection says the man was installing de-chlorination equipment and was wearing protective gear when the accident happened.
