MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) - Jack Thompson, a former Democratic 13-term state representative from Manchester, known for advocating on behalf of children and the poor, has died at the age of 84.

Democratic House of Representatives officials confirmed Thompson died Wednesday.

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey on Thursday called Thompson “a gentle soul” and “a true believer in lending a hand to the least among us.”

A Korean War veteran, Thompson represented the 13th Assembly District from 1986 to 2012. For much of his tenure, the district included only Manchester, before part of Glastonbury was later added. Thompson previously served as Manchester’s mayor from 1971 to 1975.

Manchester Democratic Town Committee Chairman Mike Pohl tells The Hartford Courant (https://cour.at/2fbyX5M ) that Thompson was a “very humble person” who made “our place in the world a little better.”
