SHIPROCK, N.M. (AP) - A northwestern New Mexico man who authorities said killed his brother with an ax has pleaded not guilty.

The Gallup Independent reports (https://goo.gl/SlCn4v) that Charley Joe Jr., of Shiprock, entered his plea Wednesday before a federal magistrate judge in Albuquerque.

According to investigators, Joe killed his brother with an ax in August following an argument over property. Authorities say Joe lived in a hogan next to the brother’s home on the Navajo Nation.

Joe was arrested at the Shiprock Chapter House where he was attending a meeting of family members discussing funeral arrangements for brother.

No trial date has been scheduled.
