MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a member of a violent street gang has admitted under a plea deal to fatally shooting a man in 2002 on Long Island.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2eIAHiB ) 33-year-old Wuilmer (WIHL’-mur) Mendosa pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Wednesday.

The judge gave a sentencing commitment to Mendosa of a decade behind bars.

Prosecutors say Mendosa was looking for street cred as an MS-13 gang member when he killed 18-year-old Jonathan Harris in Roosevelt. They say Harris was shot four times when he denied being affiliated with a rival street gang.

Authorities say Mendosa was arrested in Texas last year as he tried to enter the U.S. from El Salvador.

Mendosa’s attorney says his client is relieved and that a weight’s been lifted from him.

His sentencing is scheduled for next month.
