LOS ANGELES (AP) - Firefighters have ended their search for the body of an 84-year-old man who’s believed to have died in a fire that gutted a Los Angeles home.

The Fire Department announced Thursday that it failed to find the man’s remains after a painstaking weeklong search through debris in the Mount Washington home.

The 9,100-square-foot home caught fire on Oct. 20. It took more than 125 firefighters three hours to douse the blaze.

City News Service says some witnesses thought the missing man may have gone back inside to rescue some puppies and a cat.

About a dozen people are believed to have lived at the three-story home. One woman escaped through a window and a 74-year-old woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

Authorities haven’t discovered the cause of the fire.
