BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Peter Welch is pledging his support for a plan to develop a downtown Bennington block to bolster economic development in the community and across southwestern Vermont.

The Bennington Banner (https://bit.ly/2eywoZr ) reports that Welch, who represents the state’s only district, said Wednesday that the proposal by the Bennington Redevelopment Group “makes perfect sense” to generate economic development.

The group is made up of several community organizations that include the Bank of Bennington and Bennington College. It wants to transform a block of buildings into residential housing, office space and retail.

Bob Stevens, an engineer with a firm that’s helping to manage the project, says it’s estimated to cost up to $50 million.

He says investors have put down funds to start predevelopment work.
