BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Bennington Welcome Center is being renamed after the late U.S. Sen. Jim Jeffords, who secured funding for the project.

A dedication ceremony in memory of the late Jeffords takes place Friday at 1 p.m.

Jeffords served more than 30 years in Washington. He was elected to the House in 1974 as a Republican and then to the Senate in 1988. In 2001, he tipped control of the Senate when he quit the Republican Party to become an independent.

He died in 2014 at the age of 80.
