HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Hartford man has pleaded not guilty to murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his 18-year-old girlfriend whose death was initially reported as a suicide.

The Hartford Courant (https://cour.at/2eBvOu6 ) reports that 21-year-old Torrick Maragh entered the plea this week in Hartford. He formally waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Police say Maragh shot Nasashalie Hoy in a basement bedroom of a Broad Street home Jan. 5.

Maragh told police Hoy killed herself with his 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun after the two argued and had a physical altercation. Police say the story didn’t comport with evidence uncovered during their investigation.

Maragh remains jailed in lieu of $1.5 million bail.

Maragh’s lawyer Steven Slattery has said his client maintains Hoy shot herself and that he cared for her “very deeply.”
