JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A Jacksonville man has pleaded guilty to shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend last year.

Local news organizations report that 35-year-old Jarod Miller pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and armed burglary charges in the death of 34-year-old Nicholas Hare.

WJAX-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2dNM2kK) the charges carry a 40-year minimum mandatory sentence.

The University of North Florida student was killed in August 2015 after police said Miller broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and shot Hare before turning the gun on himself.

Miller’s ex-girlfriend fled the home and called police. Miller, who underwent surgery for his injuries, survived.

Police said Miller and his ex-girlfriend had ended their nine-year relationship more than three years prior to the shooting.

Hare was finishing an engineering degree at UNF.
