JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Forestry Commission says a Montgomery County man died while trying to extinguish a wildfire.

The forestry commission said in a news release the accident happened Thursday while the private landowner was burning an agricultural field.

The commission said the fire spread quickly and overtook the man during his attempts to put out the wildfire.

Montgomery County is one of 62 Mississippi counties under a burn ban.

State Forester Charlie Morgan said extreme drought conditions in the area caused the fire to spread quickly.

Coroner Allen Pratt says an autopsy will be performed to identify the body and determine a cause of death.
