HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) - Police in Hampton, New Hampshire, say they found a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following an hours-long standoff at a motel.

Police had responded to the motel at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in search of a man linked to a burglary investigation in Seabrook. They said the man, identified as Brayton Burnham, fired a shot in the direction of an officer who had entered his room. The officer and others retreated and heard at least one other shot as they left.

No officers fired back and none were wounded. A SWAT team was activated and efforts to communicate with him failed. A robot and camera were deployed.

Police eventually found Burnham dead in the bathroom.
