Missouri’s major-party candidates in the Nov. 8 gubernatorial election grew up in the St. Louis area but have taken different career paths. Here’s a look at the basic biographies of Republican Eric Greitens and Democrat Chris Koster.

NAME: Eric Greitens

AGE: 42. Born April 10, 1974.

HOME: St. Louis


EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in ethics from Duke University; master’s degree in development studies from Oxford University in England; doctoral degree in politics from Oxford University.

EXPERIENCE: Joined the Navy in 2001, became a SEAL officer, wounded in Iraq in 2007; White House fellow, 2005-2006; founded of The Mission Continues nonprofit organization for military veterans in 2007 and served as CEO until 2014; author; motivational speaker.

FAMILY: Wife Sheena Greitens; sons Joshua and Jacob.

NAME: Chris Koster

AGE: 52. Born Aug. 31, 1964

HOME: Jefferson City


EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from University of Missouri-Columbia; law degree from University of Missouri-Columbia; master’s degree in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis.

EXPERIENCE: Assistant attorney general, 1991-1993; worked in private legal practice, 1993-1994; Cass County prosecutor, 1995-2005, Missouri Senate, 2005-2009, Attorney General, 2009-present.

FAMILY: Single.
