FULL NAME: Patrick Lloyd McCrory.

AGE: 60. Born Oct. 17, 1956, in Columbus, Ohio. Family moved to North Carolina in 1966 and settled in Jamestown. Now splits time between Raleigh and Charlotte.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, Catawba College, 1978.

OCCUPATION: North Carolina’s governor since 2013. He previously worked for nearly 30 years at what is now Duke Energy. Later he worked at McCrory & Co., a consulting firm founded by his brother, and as senior director of strategic initiatives at the Moore & Van Allen law firm in Charlotte.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: McCrory was elected to the Charlotte City Council in 1989. He became mayor pro tempore in 1993 and was elected mayor two years later, serving a record seven terms. He won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2008 but lost to Democrat Beverly Perdue. He ran again in 2012 and won the general election over Walter Dalton.

CAMPAIGN UPSHOT: McCrory says North Carolina’s economy and state government are in better shape now than when he took office in January 2013. More than $2.5 billion in debt owed the federal government for unemployment benefits that threatened to increase business taxes for years was eliminated. Average teacher pay has risen. McCrory said lowering individual and corporate income tax rates has benefited workers and attracted businesses to expand in North Carolina. He dismisses the effect of House Bill 2 on the state economy and has defended signing the law.
