SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Bangor Daily News and the Maine Sunday Telegram have won top honors for daily and weekend newspapers in the Maine Press Association’s 2016 contest. Among weekly newspapers, The Courier-Gazette of Rockland and Mount Desert Islander of Bar Harbor won in their divisions.

The announcements of Newspapers of the Year and the award of Journalist of the Year for Erin Rhoda at the Bangor Daily News were made Saturday at the MPA awards dinner in South Portland.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston and Mount Desert Islander won Freedom of Information Awards. The Bangor Daily News and Boothbay Register received top honors for their websites.

Hall of Fame inductees were retired Sun Journal Executive Editor Rex Rhoades, former Portland Press Herald writer Steve Solloway and retired Ellsworth American Editor Hugh Bowden.
