SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - No write-in candidate for president will be on the New Mexico ballot.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2fruBXw) that New Mexico is one of at least eight states that doesn’t permit write-in ballots for the office of president.

State Bureau of Elections director Kari Fresquez says it is not explicitly prohibited but there is effectively no way for write-ins to qualify.

State laws only let presidential candidates nominated by political parties - whether they be major or minor - and independent candidates be on the ballot.

But write-in candidates can be eligible for all other elected offices in the state.

Voters who pencil in a name for president will not have their vote count.
