PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) - An investigation is underway after vandals wrote “Free Palestine” on a sign in front of a South Florida synagogue on the eve of the Jewish New Year.

The discovery was made as worshippers showed up at the Chabad of Parkland over the weekend. Rabbi Shuey Biston tells local television stations that expletives were also spray-painted on the building in northern Broward County.

Parkland Mayor Michael Udine says hateful graffiti has also shown up in other areas of the city. He says he’s “sickened” over the incident at the Chabad.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, who attends the synagogue, helped other volunteers clean up the spray paint. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
