JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says a man and a police officer attempting to help him after he fell off his sailboat have been rescued off the Rhode Island coast.

The Coast Guard received a call from the Jamestown police about 12:20 a.m. Sunday, saying a man had fallen off his boat off Jamestown and had been clinging to it for about two hours.

Authorities say a police officer in a kayak tried to help the man but fell out of his kayak, which then went under the sailboat and was lost.

A Coast Guard crew responded, illuminated the night with flares, and rescued the man and the officer.

At the boat ramp, the man was treated for hypothermia by an emergency medical crew and was taken to a Newport hospital.
