ASHFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A western Massachusetts elementary school is bringing in additional counselors on the first day of classes since a 9-year-old student was killed while getting off her school bus.

Students are returning to Sanderson Academy in Ashfield on Monday for the first time since the Friday afternoon death of Summer Steele.

Authorities say Summer was getting off the bus in Plainfield when the doors closed before she was clear. She was stuck in the door and dragged a short distance before she was struck by the bus.

The community held a vigil at the school Sunday.

The bus driver, whose name has not been disclosed, drives for F.M. Kuzmeskus. The company in a statement said it is “greatly saddened” by the death and is cooperating with investigators.

No charges have been filed.
