SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man with a knife who lunged at a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded at a new commuter rail station in Santa Monica.

The man is hospitalized in critical condition but he’s expected to survive. His name hasn’t been released.

Authorities say a knife-wielding man approached and then lunged at a deputy on the platform of the Metro Expo line station shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say there was a struggle and the man pulled a second knife, broke free from the deputy and approached a second deputy, who shot him.
