RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The troubled U.S. 460 road project has cleared a significant hurdle.

The Daily Press reports (https://goo.gl/lTb7rJ ) the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved a provisional permit for the state’s scaled back plan to build and reconstruct the road that runs from Suffolk to Petersburg.

The project has had a long and painful history. Former Gov. Bob McDonnell’s administration pushed hard for a larger, tolled road. But McAuliffe stopped work on the planned $1.4 billion, 55-mile highway after it became clear the road might not get permits it needed from the federal government over concerns about wetlands.
