CANTON, Miss. (AP) - The Natchez Trace Parkway has placed burn restrictions on all open fires effective immediately.

Dry weather has elevated the danger of forest fires, and the parkway’s restrictions correspond with burn bans in several Northeast Mississippi counties, including Clay, Chickasaw, Lee, Itawamba, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tishomingo and Webster.

The Natchez Trace ban currently affects the parkway between mileposts 203 and 309.

The use of propane or gas grills or outdoor propane/gas heaters is not affected by the ban, nor is the use of charcoal grills. However, coals and embers generated by a charcoal grill should be completely extinguished with water before removal or dumping.

The National Park Service law enforcement may issue citations to anyone who violates these restrictions.
