BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Winooski woman accused of killing her 14-month-old son, who was found dead less than an hour after a Department of Children and Families worker had visited her apartment, has accepted a plea deal weeks before her trial was to start.

The Burlington Free Press reports that 30-old Nytosha LaForce pleaded no contest on Friday to manslaughter and cruelty to a child in the death of Peighton Geraw on April 4, 2014.

She was given a sentence of six to 15 years in prison, followed by 20 years of probation.

LaForce’s boyfriend told authorities that he witnessed Laforce shake Peighton and bang his head on the floor.

LaForce had originally pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and faced 20 years to life in prison if convicted.
