GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A former employee at the state Department of Marine Resources and another person face federal charges of meth distribution in Jackson County.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office filed the charge in a bill of information in Gulfport on Thursday against Elizabeth “Libby” Denyer and Dustin Powell.
The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/2dC8IBP ) reports Denyer worked as a contract employee at the state department from April 2009 through March 2012 and is the daughter of Ocean Springs Alderman Greg Denyer. She later became a part-time administrative assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi’s office in Ocean Springs while pursuing an accounting degree.
The charging document alleges Denyer and Powell conspired to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamines from August 2014 through Thursday. The charge does not specify an amount of meth.
In April, a federal grand jury indicted Denyer, Powell and Michael Worrell on related charges alleging the trio was responsible for the distribution of more than 50 grams of meth. Any amount of meth in excess of 50 grams is punishable by 10 years to life in prison.
The indictment charged Denyer with two counts - a conspiracy charge and attempt to possess with intent to distribute. Powell and Worrell faced only a conspiracy charge.
Worrell agreed to plead guilty and be sentenced in the Southern District of California in a document he signed Aug. 18.
Denyer and Powell have remained free on bond since May.
Denyer’s attorney, Jim Davis, said he was aware of the latest charge but a court date has not been set.
It was unknown whether Powell is represented by an attorney.
