NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a Norfolk businessman has pleaded guilty to bank fraud and charges related to bribing the city’s treasurer and other high-ranking officials.
U.S. Attorney Dana Boente’s office said Friday that 67-year-old Ronald Boone gave cash, gifts and other things to Norfolk Treasurer Anthony Burfoot and a former city councilman. Officials say that in exchange, Burfoot voted for ordinances and other policies that benefited Boone’s business.
Prosecutors say Boone also bribed two other unnamed city officials.
Prosecutors say Boone faces up to 35 year in prison when he’s sentenced Jan. 26.
Burfoot is awaiting trial on charges that he took more than $400,000 in bribes and kickbacks from a developer in exchange for helping the company obtain approval for projects. A call to Burfoot’s attorney’s office wasn’t immediately returned.
