JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) - A former Johnston police officer says in a lawsuit against the town and its police chief that his constitutional rights were violated when he was fired earlier this year.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2cP2qBg ) reports that Adam Catamero says in his federal suit filed that he was fired without warning for ticketing people considered “friends” of the police department.

The police union president said high-ranking officers didn’t like how Catamero did things by the book.

Mayor Joseph Polisena says it had nothing to do with tickets - the officer wasn’t fit for duty. Chief Richard Tamburini had no comment.

The town’s court filing says Catamero told supervisors “when I put this uniform on, I feel like I want to kill someone.”

An evaluation recommended Catamero undergo therapy. Tamburini opted to fire him.
