JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - The Jersey City school board had advanced a measure approving a change that would rename a school in honor of President Barack Obama.
The Jersey Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2cPiosk ) Thursday night’s decision by the Jersey City school board comes less than a month after it rejected a measure to name School 34 for the president.
Board of Education President Vidya Gangadin says the board reconsidered its decision after hearing from the school’s staff and students who spoke out in favor of naming the school Barack Obama Elementary School.
Assemblywoman Angela McKnight first proposed naming a new school for Obama, but a committee opted for Maya Angelou instead.
The board will likely finalize the name change at its Oct. 20 meeting.
