KNOTTS ISLAND, N.C. (AP) - The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who was last seen aboard a skiff in Currituck Sound.
Coast Guard officials said in a news release Sunday night that they had suspended the search after searching nearly 100 square miles in a 20-hour period. The Coast Guard used boats and a helicopter in the effort.
The search began Saturday evening after an unmanned 19-foot skiff was seen circling south of the entrance to Tull Bay.
Others in the search included the North Carolina Fish and Wildlife Service, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and some private citizens.
Officials say the missing 45-year-old man was last seen by his sister from a different boat at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday. He was reported to not be wearing a life jacket.
