PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Two top leaders of East Timor are scheduled to speak at Rhode Island College.
Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araujo and former president Xanana Gusmao plan to speak at 10 a.m. Monday at the college’s Alger Hall in Providence.
Gusmao is a former guerrilla leader who became East Timor’s first president in 2002 after the country gained independence from Indonesia. He was later a prime minister and is now the nation’s minister of planning and strategic investment.
The event is being hosted by the college’s Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies. It’s free but registration is recommended.
Rhode Island’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed also plans to meet with the leaders on campus before their talk.
