TOWSON, Md. (AP) - Police in suburban Baltimore are releasing the name of the officer who fatally shot a bank robbery suspect last week.
Baltimore County Police spokeswoman Elise Armacost identified him Tuesday as Sgt. Bortner, a 20-year veteran with no prior shootings.
Armacost refused to disclose his first name. A 2012 departmental news release lists a Sgt. Michael Bortner assigned to the area where the shooting occurred.
Police have said the officer shot and killed 33-year-old Oddis Colvin Jr. Friday as Colvin drove toward him.
Officers had stopped the car while searching for robbery suspects near Lutherville, north of Baltimore.
A passenger in the car, 45-year-old Michael Stratton, faces robbery charges.
Both suspects were black, and the officer is white, but race doesn’t appear to be a factor in the shooting.
