HALIFAX, Pa. (AP) - The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has closed a railroad crossing leading to a boat ramp after a kayaker was killed when her car was hit by a train earlier this month.
The crossing and the boat ramp in Halifax were to be closed indefinitely as crews began working to evaluate and improve the railroad crossing where 29-year-old Trisha Hoffman was killed on Labor Day.
Hoffman, the mother of an 8-month-old, and her husband had driven separate vehicles so they could launch their kayaks at one point then pick them up when they exited Susquehanna River downstream.
The crossing was marked by signs, but not lights or a gate. Some people had said the crossing was dangerous because trees and the track’s configuration made it difficult to see approaching trains.
