ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Two men have been rescued off a sinking sailboat south of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.

Anchorage television station KTUU reports (https://bit.ly/2cWq2Q1 ) the men on the 35-foot sailboat Rafiki made radio contact with the Coast Guard in Hawaii, and the call was relayed to Juneau Tuesday evening.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Meredith Manning says the boat was taking on water near the engine compartment, but the cause wasn’t immediately clear.

The Coast Guard sent an airplane and a helicopter to the sailboat, located about 230 miles south of Cold Bay. The helicopter dropped survival suits to the two men, and then hoisted them aboard. They were taken to Sand Point, where they boarded the plane to receive medical care in Kodiak.
