TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The head of the New Jersey State Police public information unit is retiring.

Capt. Stephen Jones on Friday will reach the mandatory retirement age of 55. He joined the State Police in 1995.

The Gloucester County resident tells The Press of Atlantic City (https://bit.ly/2ddfH3p ) he was working in public relations for Atlantic Electric when he entered the police academy at age 34. He says it was challenging because he had been a desk jockey.

Jones joined the State Police in 1995 and his first assignment was to go on patrol from the Port Norris barracks.

He received the public information assignment in 2002.
