PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence police say a former city employee is facing charges stemming from a scheme to profit from the sale of plots at a city cemetery.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2bKlH67) 33-year-old Stefon Washington turned himself in to police Friday. He is charged with embezzlement, unlawful appropriation, forgery and related crimes. He was released on personal recognizance.

Washington is a former city Parks Department employee. He is accused of taking about $50,000 that was paid for burial plots at the North Burial Ground and funneling it into checking accounts he created.

City officials say Washington was terminated in 2015 as a result of the investigation.

A woman who answered the phone at a number listed for Washington said he no longer lived there. It’s unclear whether Washington has a lawyer.
