HANCOCK, Md. (AP) - Maryland State Police have identified one person who was killed and another who sustained injuries in a pair of unrelated car wrecks on Interstate-70 in Washington County.

The driver in the first crash, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Friday near Hancock, has been identified as 60-year-old Allen Kifer. Police say the driver of a tractor-trailer lost control and jackknifed across the eastbound lanes of the highway. Police say Kifer struck the tractor-trailer. After the wreck police say Kifer got out of his car and was struck by another tractor-trailer passing by. He died at the scene.

Roughly 20 minutes later, a second crash occurred about one mile away. In that wreck police say 53-year-old Robert Watkins rear-ended a tractor trailer and was transported to a hospital.
